Perspectives on Diversity and Culture
The three people that I chose for this assignment:
1. Giliardo Lucas he is actually one of my Hispanic parents. (A different gender)
2. TiTi Gaiusbayode she is a friend of the family. ( A different culture she is African)
3. Patricia Thompson she is my coworker. (A different race)
Mr. Lucas states that culture is different beliefs that separates one group of people from another. He states that diversity is the difference between people. Mrs. Gaiusbayode states that culture is a person's beliefs because of their background in which they grew up in. She states that diversity is different cultures in this society. Mrs. Thompson states that culture is the main heritage of a specific group. She states that diversity is having different races and different cultures in a group.
The aspect of culture and diversity that was included in the answers was that in the video segment Gonzalez-Mena states that culture is “a set of often unconscious rules that govern everything we all do, that we learn early” (Laureate Education, 2011). The answers that the three people stated to me shows that all three had there own definition of culture. There culture is what they have been taught since they were little. For example, culture is beliefs, values that create the attitudes of people. Diversity is the differences of groups. After talking with all three of them, I feel that neither one of them label anything or judge anybody they just gave their opinion of culture and diversity.
Thinking about other people's definition of culture and diversity influenced my own thinking about these topics because every one's culture is different and diversity helps me to understand the differences of cultures. I think that both of theses topics are different and people have their own definition of what they mean to them. I enjoy talking about culture and diversity. I guess because I am getting deep in understanding about cultures and how diversity relates as well.

Vonecia,
ReplyDeleteI find it interesting that regardless of race and values the definition of culture comes back to one thing; how you were raised. As a child in the 70's I did not go to preschool I stayed home with my parents learning from them and my siblings. So many children go to school now so they are getting a lot of their culture from a stranger, because they spend 8 of their waking hours away from home. Do you have any strategies that you use to incorporate a child's home culture into the classroom? Great Post by the way and I enjoyed reading everyone's different responses to the same questions.
Good luck with your studies,
Susan
Vonecia,
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed your post. I thought it was interesting to get answers from diverse groups. You spoke with a Hispanic and an African. They had very good answers. Each answer was different. Nice job :)

Hi Vonecia,
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed your blog this week! I agree with you that throughout this course I have learned culture is complex and entails many elements. Prior to this course, I had never examined culture to this extent. I feel that this is really benefiting me in my professional practice, as I am more aware of the true aspects to culture and diversity. Thanks for sharing!

I enjoyed reading your blog this week! I think it was very interesting the three different people you chose to talk to and it was nice to hear what their responses were. I can't wait to learn more about your ideas of culture throughout this course.
ReplyDeleteVonecia, I think everyone agrees that culture has to do with beliefs and values, and everyone knows that diversity has to do with differences. What some do not realize is how deeply culture and diversity goes, and how important it is to understand individual cultures, and learning to put them all together in one setting. Thanks for your post.
ReplyDeleteHello Vonecia,
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed your post and the diversity amoong your responses. It is intresing to hear the responses of indivdiduals when you ask for a definiton on two concepts like these. I greatly believe their would great difference in answers we talked with more people. Althought everyone has the same concept of culture and diversity, how we express the two terms is very different and shows diversity. After reading your respones you come to understand how significant culture is to every individual.
